I have a lot of feelings about the Kickstarter campaign though, some of which aren’t really related to the intentions/consequences of the campaign itself.

I really wish I knew more about how academic journals are founded, and what options exist for creating one that is naming a field. TSQ will be put out by Duke University Press, who also does GLQ. Do journals normally have to front something like $20,000 to the publisher to get started? Where does that money usually come from? Do academic departments sponsor that kind of cash? What does it mean for an academic journal to become profitable? Would trans* studies as a field have to become more “profitable” for the journal to remain viable?

How much does it suck that trans* people always have to front money that is generally paid by institutions to do stuff that they need? (journals, health care, surgeries, legal changes, etc.)

I’ve seen several critiques of TSQ not coming out as an online, open-source journal. I share that feeling, hesitantly. I get why having a print journal—hosted by Duke no less—is important for establishing a field, which is more of what this Kickstarter seems to be about than funding the journal. Does that mean I would be investing in a field I could potentially publish in? That feels good but also feels fucked. I also know that magazines like Original Plumbing (w/e) held similar fundraising campaigns but still produce print copies that are sold. I wonder about the assumption that all content hosted online should be free. I like the idea of TSQ being a book-length journal you can buy at a bookstore. I wish academic journals more broadly weren’t connected almost solely to institutional access. Ugh too many feelings.

Asking for donations that would end up with the founders/editors coming for a campus visit is really smart and actually a huge effort on the part of the editors. I mean, Dean Spade came to UW and he’s everybody’s trans* studies darling and painted as a totally awesome person and I am 98% sure he charged more than $1500 for the visit. He does different things with that money (I think he gives it to SRLP) than some campus visit people. But campus visits are cheap and are sometimes how contingent faculty make ends meet (not that Paisley Currah or Susan Stryker are contingent faculty).

Ok back to grading everything ever.

(via Man Candles | Manly Scented Candles For Men - Yankee...

(via Man Candles | Manly Scented Candles For Men - Yankee Candle)

rgr-pop:

but that’s just being an asshole not a biker

ok, people keep doing this to me? “you talk about the time you got injured by a person on a bike therefore you are disparaging all bicycles ever”

some context:

a) this has happened to me at least 5-6 times on campus over a period of three years. once I thought I lost range of motion in my arm permanently because I got swiped by a person on a bike going 15 mph+ on a marked pedestrian path, and they didn’t even stop to check on me when they knocked me over.

b) on this campus there are thousands more bikes than there are cars. like, maybe tens of thousands more. there are way way more bikes than there are cars.

c) I’m not gonna say straight-up that people on bikes should only use the bike lanes because I know that they are imperfect and, on a lot of spots on this campus, too congested and slow. and, in fact, “bike traffic laws are unsafe” is something that’s an issue pretty much everywhere. however, generally, the behavior of people on campus on bikes who hurt pedestrians is typically not “I broke this bike traffic rule because I was trying to be more safe” it’s “I broke this bike traffic rule because I am on a bike and the person I am running over is not on a bike therefore I will not get hurt if I swipe them, and I can use my speed and bike to run them off the sidewalk, and I am late for class.”

but we also have one of the more comprehensive set of bike lanes anywhere. this is not a situation where bike users are marginalized, at all. there are more marked bike paths on campus than there are roads for cars! this is such a crazy bike culture that at the end of the year every year the police department impounds actual hundreds of bikes that people choose to abandon on campus rather than bother to fix up and take home when they leave for the summer. hundreds, sometimes thousands. today lucas snagged one (when they get impounded they get date tags and become police property therefore fair game) that had been chained to a bike rack for months and not touched. it is a $150 bike. that some kid just felt like leaving there. the university has an entire store where it sells impounded and abandoned bicycles for profit.

d) hopefully that last bit should help illustrate that bike users on campus are not particularly correlated with poor people on campus. mostly the opposite, if anything. in the city adjacent to the campus, there is not a lot of “bike culture” or bike traffic. it’s not an area where bikes are largely utilized by poor people, at least compared to (for example) Detroit. BUT at the same time, the campus bike hegemony (ie middle class college kids with bikes and political/social power) makes it easier for poor students to access bikes and bike culture, because we have bike workshops and shit. this is good, but, somehow this is something I have to remind people, walking is still less money than biking. walking…cost…less money? than riding bike?

e) I have only ever gotten injured/hit by bikes on campus when I was on pedestrian/non-bike areas. I am VERY CAUTIOUS about staying away from bike lanes and bike paths, because I don’t want to die. on one hand, sure, “those people were breaking traffic laws,” but when this happens so consistently it’s kind of hard to brush it all of as an exception to the rule. for example, some marked pedestrian areas are implicitly known on campus as unofficial bike baths, even when they are right next to bike paths, literally there are bike territories. not to mention that it’s pretty routine to see people cut across grass and stuff. because they are entitled? it’s pretty much just about entitlement + machinery. it’s pretty safe to say that when you give bike culture to a bunch of entitled shitty college students, then bike culture becomes entitled and shitty. and on campus, entitled shitty college student with bike is the majority?

f) I literally cannot believe that people are taken aback by the concept that people who have to walk and don’t have bikes might in some ways be marginalized by people who have machinery that cost money and makes them go fast and is capable of injury. to say nothing of who can ride a bike, and while public transit and walking are not accessible to everyone, they are more accessible than PUMPING A MACHINE WITH YOUR LEGS. earlier I was gonna make a joke about how no poor person in my family ever rode a bike but then I remembered it’s because they can’t because disability.

g) big piece of metal going fast run me over hurts??? I’m sorry if this offends

h) and cars also run over a lot of people on bikes in America. it happens on this campus but less so than in non-campus areas. this sucks, esp because bigger machinery -> less machinery. however, luckily, pedestrians have the privilege of being impervious to getting run over by cars.

i) I have never gotten hit by a car on foot I don’t think but that’s literally only because I’m so disgustingly cautious in streets that it’s embarrassing and no one wants to be friends with me because of it.

j) jesus christ wear a helmet kids THE WORLD DOESN’T BELONG TO YOU AND YOU’RE NOT INVINCIBLE

k) we also have longboarders. people who use longboards as their primary means of transportation. they often use the sidewalks but it’s ok because longboarding is slower than walking. they are a danger only to themselves and/or the fabric of culture in general.

anyway so my point is that “being an asshole not a biker” is basically the norm for bikers on this campus, which is important to know about bike culture here, but also

NOOOOOOBODY CARES ABOUT RADICAL PEDESTRIAN RIGHTS

On my campus, there’s a lot of construction going on right now, which means a lot of sidewalks and ramps are being rerouted, so the accessible path to my building changes almost every week. The last week they also closed part of the road. So almost every biker I saw decided it was a good idea to ride their bike in the ADA designated part of the sidewalk that had big “ADA Access” signs and was already too narrow for two people walking.

In this case it wasn’t even “I gotta get somewhere fast” because you can’t ride fast through a choke of people. The bikers would just be too bummed to get off their bike, wanted to push through everyone irritatingly, etc. Also the biker would have to get off in 10 feet to carry their bike down the stairs, since the “ADA Access” sidewalk wasn’t actually near any ramp lol

I mean, I ride a bike to campus but why would you do this thing

problem-dogs:
